Surreal and scarce believable — a ledge
On which a friend is perched, as on a shrine;
Half gallows humour, half in deadly pledge,
A dead man laughing with us, drinking wine.
Sitting drinking, talking and laughing with a man who is terminally ill and slated to be dead in months, but who (as yet!) shows almost no outward sign of it, is a surreal experience — as my friends will testify. There is no ‘correct’ way of doing it, because we have no model on which to base our responses. To put it plainly, it’s just weird.
