I stand with those opposed to all messiahs,
To sycophant believers — blind and deaf—
Who, if they could, would drag us through the fires
Of Faith— aye!— faith with a capital ‘F’.
Always enough of new to serve their turn:
Now Christ— now Marx— now prophets long denied,
Those who would have you burn before you learn
That swastika and cross march side by side
To punish any unbelieving foe —
Star chambers pumped with gas and infidels;
Should racks prove too old-fashioned— or too slow—
Invention will provide new living hells.
Blind Faith and True Belief — twin seas to dread—
For men may drown in either, blindly led.
