My ornamental maples are tenacious;
While oak and alder mourn for what is lost
They sulk in glory, obdurate, ungracious,
Their kamikaze boughs defying frost.

The memory of summer serenades us,
While autumn’s fingers tug till we are shorn,
And winter finds us out, and death persuades us
To drop our golden hoard upon the lawn.
