Conversation with Myself

You will do whatever it is you must.
I shall do whatever it is I can.
Genius tosses talent half a crust.

Each of us knows his friend a better man,
Or envies him his finest attributes.
Each of us helps his neighbour when he can,

Or, should I say, we help them when it suits.
And love them best when they have gone away,
As single-mothers envy prostitutes

Their Gucci bags— and yet despise their prey.
A cynic knows no one that he may trust,
And so is pitied by naiveté.

I shall trouble the world with cut and thrust.
You will do whatever it is you must.
