I always had my way, as you had yours;
Each to the other courteous but firm,
Interpreters of verdicts, codes and laws,
Of jurisdiction, penalty and term,
Softening confrontation where we could—
Our love no less for that and no less rash
Than vulgar fires of paraffin and wood
That blaze a while and then subside to ash.
A widened eye served notice of dissent;
A slight embrace, apology in full;
A short ‘Good night’ to signal discontent;
Our bed the only site of push and pull.
  The world misunderstood such lack of show:
  Serenity without— caged fire below.
