The leaf had blown for a half a field
  To land beyond my hedge,
I crossed the lawn to pluck its stem
  And trace its ragged edge.

Its time was up, its fate long sealed
  To shred in winter’s freeze.
I bore it back beneath its bough —
  More humus means more trees!
